Clyde Longerbone

Age 95, died January 12, 2021, Mr. Longerbone was born in Des Moines, IA June 2, 1925. Clyde joined the Navy in June of 1942; served on the USS Sioux in the South Pacific Theater of war from 1942 to Dec 1944. The Sioux saw action in five invasions during World War II and Clyde received the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater, Victory medals and Combat Ribbon. He was transferred to shore duty stateside and returned to Des Moines on leave to marry Darlene E. Zitzer on Dec. 27, 1944. They honeymooned in San Francisco where Clyde served on shore patrol duty. He was transferred to Destroyer base San Diego until his discharge after World War II and then moved to Chula Vista, Ca. Clyde worked as a Journeyman Machinist at Campbell Machine in San Diego for 7 years. He joined the Chula Vista Fire Department in 1952 and progressed through the ranks. He was appointed to Fire Chief by the City Council in 1976 and retired as Chief on December 28, 1979, after 27 years on the department. Clyde moved to Hemet with his wife, Darlene in December 1979. Clyde belonged to both the Chula Vista Elks, Lodge #2011 and Hemet Elks, Lodge #1740 serving as a Trustee at both Lodges. He was a Past Grand Knight of the Valley Knights of Columbus Council #5528 and Past Faithful Navigator of Ramona Assembly #1733 Knights of Columbus. He was Life member of the VFW, Life member of the National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors and member of the California State Firefighters Association. Clyde was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Darlene in 2015. Clyde and Darlene had four children, James (Jeanne), Sharla (Ken), Larry (deceased) and Kathy (Mark); grandchildren (8), Scott, Emily, Andrew, Todd, Kevin, Mark, Jeff and Chris; great grandchildren (14), Jack, Erin, Sebastian, Marley, Joel, Kalysta, Michaela, Annalise, Krysandra, Lucian, Colin, Madison, Flynn, Mirren. He is survived by his partner, Doris Dodge.
