OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD SELECTION GUIDELINES Jump to Submission Form

The Award:

  • On an annual basis, A Night for Veterans (ANFV) shall select three veterans who exemplify the highest standards of excellence in concert with the ANFV motto: HONOR.SERVICE.SUPPORT
  • The Outstanding Service Award shall consist of an American Eagle statue and medallion presented to the veterans selected at the annual We Remember: A Night for Veterans gala fundraising event.
  • A video and/or other presentation shall be made at the gala event to allow attendees an opportunity to learn the basis upon which selections were made.
  • Recipients shall be extended time at the event to make a few short remarks at the time the presentation is made.

Nomination Process:

  • Any current member of the Steering Committee for A NIGHT FOR VETERANS organization may nominate a veteran to be considered for the Veteran Service Award.
  • Nominations will be accepted from the community, veteran groups and or representatives of an organization or business supporting veteran’s causes.
  • Nominations will also be accepted via an online application routed through the Night for Veterans website.
  • All nominations will be forwarded to the Outstanding Service Award selection subcommittee for review.  Electronic as well as hard copy nominations will be accepted.
  • At the time candidates are nominated, the subcommittee chair will assign subcommittee members to follow-up with nominees to advise them that they have been nominated.  Candidates will be asked to confirm their interest in receiving this award – if chosen – and will also be advised in general terms of the selection process to forestall any assumption on the nominee’s part that nomination means automatic selection.  All nominees shall be extended an invitation to attend the ANFV event regardless of the outcome of the selection process.

Eligibility:

  • The award is limited to US military veterans be they active duty, National Guard, retired career or otherwise.  Veterans no longer on active duty must have been released from the military under other than any form of punitive discharge.  Service in all military branches is acceptable, US Army, US Air Force, US Navy, US Marines and US Coast Guard.
  • Nominees must be members of their community in good standing with no current legal, social or other challenges that would not be consistent with the nature of this award.

Documentation:

  • Nomination material should include a concise narrative of the nominee’s military service submitted by the nominator to include name, rank, serial number, deployments and any military awards, or submit a copy of their DD214 along with the service narrative.

Criteria for Selection:

  • A nominee should be a recipient of a Purple Heart, at minimum, or a Bronze Star with "V" device or higher medal issued for gallantry, valor or heroism under combat conditions, or
  • A veteran who has not been awarded the above mentioned medals may be considered for his/her meritorious service to fellow veterans, specific military organization or exceptional community service.
  • As mentioned above, the veteran cannot be considered if he/she received any form of punitive discharge.
  • The nominee must be a citizen in good standing with the community.
  • A nominee’s history should align with one or more of the elements of the ANFV mantra:  HONOR.SERVICE.SUPPORT

Veteran Service Award Review Subcommittee:

  • The subcommittee shall be comprised of a minimum of four members from the organization (ANFV).
  • If possible, there should be at least two veterans on the subcommittee.
  • The chair of the subcommittee shall be appointed by the President of ANFV and confirmed by the members at large.
  • The subcommittee shall meet regularly as determined by the subcommittee chair in a timely fashion such that rankings can be produced and forwarded to the ANFV committee for approval, and subsequent interviews and/or videos can be undertaken.

Selection Process:

  • The subcommittee shall review and rank all nominations.  The subcommittee shall be empowered to reject nominations that do not meet the minimum criteria for selection as set forth above.
  • To the extent possible, review and rankings shall be completed by each subcommittee member who will then forward their rankings to the subcommittee chair for compilation.
  • Once all eligible nominations are ranked, the top three candidates will be identified by the subcommittee and forwarded for approval by the ANFV committee.
  • In the event a selected recipient is unable to or subsequently declines receiving the award, the rankings established by the subcommittee shall be used in the order they are ranked to determine a suitable replacement.
  • To the extent possible, all recipients shall be required to attend the ANFV gala event.
